Yea went to the donate page to donate $20 or so and there was not bitcoin option. Bit of a bummer, it would be cool to be able to donate to Open Source Software with Open Source Money.

Simplest way is literally just put a BTC address, otherwise you could use BTC Pay server another FOSS tool.

Phoenix already has it live. CLN supports it natively, and LDK is building it in so any wallet using that toolkit gets it eventually. And yes, backwards compatibility is exactly how it works. A wallet can try BOLT12 first and fall back to BOLT11 if the other side doesn't support it. No reason it has...

I was always under the impression that lightning was very good with privacy, not perfect but much much better than say a bank transfer and that it would be quite difficult for someone to actually track down and transfers.

Is this not true ?

Better than a bank transfer? Yes, significantly. The routing is onion-layered so intermediary nodes only see one hop. No central ledger logging every transaction.
