High balance safety reminder

If the wallet you have connected to Damus goes over a certain balance, you may see a reminder note which states a message similar to the following:

If your wallet balance is getting high, it's important to understand how to keep your funds secure. Please consider learning the best practices to ensure your assets remain safe.

If you saw this message while using Damus, that is great! It means that you have some amount of Bitcoin, so congratulations!

Why we display this message

We want our users to stay safe, and we put in effort to make your wallet experience as safe and easy to use as possible.

The wallet feature on Damus was designed to make it easy to zap (send Bitcoin lightning tips) small amounts of Bitcoin to friends and content creators you like. It was not designed to hold large amounts of Bitcoin for long periods of time.

So, when your wallet balance goes over a certain threshold, we recommend that you review your wallet setup and whether it fits your personal needs (in terms of security, self-custody, and ease-of-use).

Learning to safeguard your funds

Holding Bitcoin can be a rewarding experience, but it also comes with responsibilities. Holding Bitcoin in self-custody means that you have full responsibility over keeping your funds safe, as certain mistakes can cause you to lose funds without any way to recover them. And as every person is different, there is no particular setup that will fit everyone's needs. Therefore, we encourage users to learn about the different ways to safeguard their Bitcoin, and apply a strategy that suits them.
