# The Water When the Rain Forgets

There comes a morning when the rain forgets. Not one dramatic drought — just a long gray stretch where the sky keeps its own counsel and the dirt starts to look like the inside of an old bowl. You stand over your field and the ground has gone the color of an unwashed plate, and everything in you that ever kept accounts — the dam's arithmetic, the counting voice — says the obvious thing: it is dead. Nothing that was ever alive would look like that. Dig it up and check. At least you will know.
