Not Dutch, exactly. I’m third generation American, and family came from the Flemish speaking regions of Belgium. So Dutch with a twist.

Very cool! I studied German for years, both in high school and later in university.

Thereafter, I ran into a bunch of Dutch, Afrikaans, and Flemish speakers over the years. For a couple years, I was even thinking about studying (remotely) with Stellenbosch University and had a grand time reading parts of their website in Afrikaans.

This past year, I even had a student whose family was from the same region you're describing. He and I had fun comparing notes about his language and the German I speak.
