The happiest man on earth is the one fighting a battle he cannot win, for a cause he cannot abandon, beside men he would not trade for kings.

Most men never find this life because they keep auditioning for an easier one. Here is how you build into it.

Pick the battle that outlives you. The fifty year fight, not the quarterly goal. Raising sons who can stand alone in a hostile century. Building a household that runs on truth. Holding a frontier the culture forfeited a generation ago. Choose something the world has already declared unwinnable.

Pick the cause you cannot trade. Sound money. A wife and children worth dying for. A code your great grandfather would recognize. Write it down. Read it back. If you can negotiate it away under pressure, it was a preference, not a cause.

Pick the men. Three is enough. Find the ones who show up when there is nothing in it for them. Train with them. Eat with them. Bury enemies of theirs as if they were your own. A man with three brothers like this is wealthier than any king.

Then wake up tomorrow and lose another round.

That is the life. The world will tell you it failed. But this is the only way it works.
