Is the duration of peace directly proportional to the magnitude of the preceding disaster?
WWI was a global catastrophe, followed by barely 20 years of fragile truce. WWII was an exponential leap in destruction, yet it paved the way for nearly 80 years of (relative) stability.
It seems humanity only finds balance when the scars are deep enough to be terrifying.
Now that those scars are fading, the peace is starting to creak.
Are we doomed to need ever-greater disasters to secure longer eras of peace? Or can we find a way to break this cycle of 'peace through trauma'?
History is a brutal teacher.
