Don't remember to be honest. Haven't looked into the client situation in years.
Looked into the gemini spec though. I don't think nostr would work all that well over gemini compared to websockets. Missing publish/subscribe support would require client-side polling, which wastes data and stresses relays. JSON is also much easier to parse and read compared to Gemtext.
