The U.S. government transferred 833.6 BTC worth just over $71 million on Tuesday, marking the first bitcoin movement from government-linked wallets since August 26. The holdings were connected to two separate cases: bitcoin recovered from the 2016 Bitfinex hack and assets seized in the HashFlare fraud case, in which Sergei Potapenko and Ivan Turõgin sold hash-rate contracts for data centers that did not contain the promised machines.
The transfers included a small test payment to Coinbase Prime followed by 264.86266831 BTC to a new wallet, while another 568 BTC tied to the HashFlare case also moved. The U.S. Marshals Service uses Coinbase for custody and trading services involving seized digital assets. After the transactions, the government was reported to retain 323,693.83 BTC, valued at about $27.72 billion.
