They become directly reachable from the internet, that is true, but that is also true for any device that has a static ip, security depends on the FIPS shim and exposed ports on the device. I think it's a tradeoff worth making though. Since that also means your devices are reachable by you from anywhere in the world, and with some good firewall management that could be made even more secure/useful.
