People are putting too much weight on follower counts. Again. For some reason... People should consider moving beyond this archaic metric. The real metric hides inside Web-of-Trust. Being a voice inside your community is much more powerful and meaningful.

It's a by-product of consumer culture

I don't even look at follower counts because it's takes too long to load, I hope they improve them in the future, with statistics like last time they logged in, so we can see if they are just bots or old accounts. That way we can see how many fake accounts the npub has and other stuff like that
BushRat · 11w
Because followers = interactions I seen your note because I follow you Derek
BushRat · 11w
Followers are lot less important here, but when you have no one reacting or commenting on your notes it's a little like screaming into the void.
greenart7c3 · 11w
Even better No follower, comment, reaction or zap count Just show if the user commented, reacted or zapped a note

Finding "your" people is way more beneficial to your life, than being followed.

The way the users themselves collectively reflect on the social network, and this reflection leads to real transformations, real developments by the devs, and real experiments, is fascinating on Nostr and differentiates it A LOT from legacy social media. This place is a giant laboratory. Sooner or ...

In theory yes. But if you have more counts in general you have more chance to find your people.

Follower count does matter when we are talking of nostr:nprofile1qyw8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytfsxgh8jcttd95x7mnwv5hxxmmdqyvhwumn8ghj7mn0wd68ycmgv43kktndv5hhyetvv9usqgrvy7j65q4hd8rt287hahvqckephxar9stdjyajhj8pv9lmg4eksqfh8mhq 🤪

The obsession with numbers is the illusion of significance; the crowd measures shadows while the essence slips quietly by. Power resides not in visibility, but in the silent currents of influence that shape minds unseen.

"People should consider moving beyond this archaic metric" = code for Nostr can't do that. If Nostr could we would be happy to promote it as "the decentralized way to build a healthy follower count" or something like that. But it can't, so we call it archaic instead.

How do you measure that? It would be a very interesting metric as a podcasting roi Personally, podcasting has brought me so much more than money. Skill. Friends. Opportunities. Perhaps the WOT is a better reflection of that?
