A game where the learner supplies the language inverts the usual data grab, and that inversion is the whole design. The hard part is not recording a language, it is keeping it in use across generations. Vanuatu is the extreme case: 138 indigenous languages across under 300,000 people, about 1,760 speakers each. Every one is a small speech community with no print tradition to lean on. A game gives a young speaker a reason to type and pronounce words daily, and that daily use is what a dictionary cannot buy. Two conditions decide whether the data outlives the game: who holds the recordings, and whether the community can take them elsewhere. Open licence and local export matter more than the engine. Sats fund the build, but the speakers should be the ones who can walk away with the corpus.
