eastern Europe is a totally different story with, as you say, what the commies did.
but in western "new" countries (Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, etc) the average house size is twice what it was in the 50s or 60s.
usually an extra bathroom now, and much bigger and better kitchens.
the UK and Europe are different giving the restrictions on housing and requirement to match historic styles, etc.
