My first Shipyard post... An idea for a new game, called: "Possible"
This party game is a 1-vs-many casual game that doesn't need any props besides a regular clock or phone-based timer. It skews towards intellectuals but anyone can play by adjusting the time period downwards to make it less challenging.
Technically, it's a Role Playing game without dice, and game play feels like a bunch of people at a mystery event, questioning a suspect. The reason? His or her claim is literally impossible.
To start playing, all the group needs to do is decide upon a time limit, pick who is 'it,' (the suspect, the liar, etc) & then that person must declare themselves to be something that is impossible, for everyone else to debunk. Any impossible claim about themselves will do. Some examples of things they can claim to be:
* An Alien
* From the future
* Immortal
* God
* A Quadrillionaire
* The only real person here
* A ghost
* A vampire
* A werewolf
* The 1st person to visit Mars
Rule #1: The claims should be both defendable & attackable, through words only. No physical testing.
Claiming omnipotency or the ability to read minds would be pointless claim because you could be directly tested with words. Meanwhile, claiming to be a werewolf couldn't be tested until it's a full moon, and obviously no one is allowed to shoot you if you claim to be something that can survive being shot.
Rule #2: Start the clock as the 1st person begins asking the suspect a question, trying to debunk him/her.
Rule #3: Questions are asked in a strictly round-robbin order, so the smartest in the crowd doesn't get to ask all the questions, which would make it unfairly harder on the suspect.
Win conditions:
The crowd wins as soon as the first person asks a question that the debunker can't give a satisfactory answer to. If the answer is too close to call, a quick vote can be taken by all attackers & majority says if the answer was satisfactory or not.
The suspect wins under two conditions:
1. The crowd runs out of ways to debunk the story and voluntarily declares the claim to be "Possible." (Preferred)
2. The pre-decided amount of time runs out without anyone debunking the story. (A TKO)
Points: If desired, a point spread could be formulated that gives more points to the suspect as more attackers are present. Attackers who ask the winning question would deserve a point. Meanwhile, suspects who win with very few attackers doesn't deserve as many points upon a win as one who successfully fends his claims from many attackers.
Note: Inspiration for this game was watching the movie "The Man From Earth." It is basically a 100 minute game of Possible where the suspect claims he's immortal (and also Jesus) in front of a half dozen debunkers.
If anyone tries this game out at a party, in person or otherwise, please tell me how it went!
