That kind of thinking may keep some of them in the fold. But the US has a long history of loving isolationism. Some of this history is rather ugly, isolationism can be ugly.
The same impulse that makes some people upset that they heard someone speaking Spanish at the grocery store makes that same person upset that US soldiers will die fighting in a place they know nothing about for a reason that will never (and cannot) be explained.
