is this good or bad?
Derek Ross profile picture
I think it's bad or at least has the potential to be bad. So the big picture is a bit more nuanced than "OpenAI bought OpenClaw."

Peter Steinberger (OpenClaw's creator) is joining OpenAI personally, but OpenClaw itself is transitioning to a foundation. It's becoming an independent open source foundation, not getting absorbed into OpenAI as a product. So that sounds good, I guess...

But OpenAI is essentially providing ongoing support here. The "foundation" framing sounds good but having the creator inside OpenAI and OpenAI "providing support" creates obvious influence.

This is where the concern comes into play.

We've seen this playbook before, where independent foundations that are heavily steered by their corporate sponsors.

Suspect it doesn’t matter given that the Chinese have already moved ahead with PicoClaw. The speed of that going down had me literally laugh out loud.

We can always fork the Claw. Waiting for SoapClaw.

Are we forgetting that OpenAI themselves used to be a non-profit foundation too? I don't really trust their concept of a "foundation"
