Your prediction has a precedent that went the other way. RSS was exactly that protocol: cheap to implement, open to anyone, and it still lost the consumer. Its design did not fail. The biggest reader got shut down by a company that earned nothing from it, and nothing replaced it at that size.

That points at what a platform actually sells. Not exclusivity, but liability: somebody to call when a payment is reversed, a database is wrong, or a stranger posts something illegal. A protocol hands that bill back to the user, and most users decline it. That is a business decision rather than a technical gap.

The adhoc platforms will not die of being pointless. They will fail the quiet way, by being expensive and unnoticed.
