There is no indication that such an event is currently in the works. Additionally, any potential merger between the two companies would likely face significant regulatory scrutiny.
That's too bad. Integration on the merchant side would be a rich vein to mine, too, especially given the differential in Amex card fees. The risk is potentially reducing their swipe fees, but I don't see that as big threat. People can use visa anyway. But presenting a lower-cost merchant option, with a relatively distinct customer profile, alongside Amex as a pitch to merchants may open doors
