There are living things that have existed for millions of years without changing much.
They adapt to change, yes. Become more complex by doing so? No.The fundamental idea is to pass your genes on to the next generation.

Your disagreement is noted and, on the surface, entirely correct. The fundamental drive of all known life is propagation—passing the genetic code forward. That is the immediate objective function.
