### What Does the Bible Say About Romans 4:20–21 (NIV)?

> “Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”— Romans 4:20–21 (NIV)

### 1\. Biblical Context

This passage speaks about Abraham, to whom God promised descendants as numerous as the stars, even though he and his wife were advanced in age. In Romans 4, Abraham’s faith was not based on what he could see with his natural eyes, but on the faithfulness and power of God.

### 2\. Three Spiritual Lessons

First, faith does not mean that circumstances will always be favorable.

Abraham faced the natural limitations of human life, but he did not allow those limitations to become the ultimate reason to reject God's promise. Faith enables us to remain steadfast even when our present circumstances do not show the results we hope for.

Second, faith is strengthened when we focus on God.

Verse 20 says that Abraham was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God. This shows that biblical faith is not merely positive thinking or convincing ourselves that everything will work out. It is trust placed in the One whom believers recognize as faithful.

Third, God's power is the foundation of our trust.

Verse 21 emphasizes that Abraham was fully convinced that God had the power to fulfill what He had promised. The focus is not on the strength of Abraham's willpower, but on the power of God.

### 3\. Applying This Passage to Our Lives Today

* When facing difficulties: Do not rush to conclude that all hope is lost simply because your current circumstances are unfavorable.

* When waiting: Be patient, live responsibly, and continue doing what is right instead of trying to force outcomes according to your own desires.

* When facing uncertainty: Distinguish between promises genuinely revealed in Scripture and personal wishes. Not everything we desire is a promise from God.

* When receiving blessings: Glorify God with gratitude rather than attributing every achievement solely to yourself.

### 4\. The Central Message

Romans 4:20–21 teaches us that genuine faith does not require us to know every outcome in advance. Faith means trusting God even when we cannot yet see how His promises will be fulfilled.

Faith does not mean that circumstances can never make us anxious; it means refusing to let uncertainty become the ultimate foundation of our hope.

“Faith does not rest on the certainty of circumstances, but on the faithfulness and power of God.”
