Settling for ugly in the name of cheap and efficient was a huge mistake because we deprived ourselves of experiencing this daily.

Very pretty indeed!
And as much as I agree with these buildings being very nice to look at
... I am very much happy that I can now keep my money for other stuff I choose myself, like more support for the family and heating the house.
I am pretty sure that back in the day not everyone was as happy as these buildings were build with most expensive materials and with mandatory payments from plebs, also: taxation.
Back when there was no separation between church and state yet.
The workmanship was crazy good back then by those crazy good people who were allowed to build it.
To enjoy it, one would need to have the luxury to even be allowed to attend church, have nice clothes and then your seat was ranked by how much you pay the church extra and ofcourse family status.
To be able to enjoy the buildings now without the mandatory stealing of money or people telling you how to behave and the freedom to move is the real privilege.
Just my two sats and probably unpopulair viewpoint
