Everyone says Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel on his back.

He did not.

From 1508 to 1512 he stood upright on wooden scaffolds he designed himself, neck bent back toward the ceiling.

The pain was real. He even sketched himself working and wrote a poem about it. It ends with: "I am not a painter."

The lying on his back image mostly comes from the 1965 film The Agony and the Ecstasy.

Don't trust, verify. Even in art history.
