Search is working with no issues on nitter.net (or other mirrors of nitter). You can even use in Tor with javascript turned off.

Likely because the bots are using the IP range for spam? I have sympathy for the engineers cuz they must be having a really hard time with bot farms. I try to block bot accounts (usually generic Asian girls) every day from following my profile on Twitter. I swear someone is trying to track profiles...
