We have a tough decision to make today. It’s actually very easy, but it’s going to invite lots of questions and probably some resistance from family and friends.

Yay! good for you. Personally I would listen to family and friends' concerns and engage with them in good faith ... and then change the subject.
There are so many solid arguments for homeschooling that don't actually sound particularly radical: we'll save time/energy; this will allow the kids to go deep into subjects as soon as they're ready; etc.
