Really good writeup, thank you.
Counterpoints:
- numbers are skewed by adblockers (many users aren't choosing ads, they are choosing not to pay)
- choosing ads is a preference, not inherently bad if the system is sound, particularly, IMO, when referral rather than datamining)
- numbers are skewed by bots (1000 bot guy isn't programming them to zap)
- people who choose $0 in V4V aren't 'freeloaders' and implying that they are not only undermines the concept of V4V but turns off people who might have $12 in their account and want to listen to their favorite millionaire's music
- the lenses that the modern consumer views V4V through do not adequately represent the perspective of the consumer in a free market of choice. Status quo is an entitled environment of scarcity where most have real consequences to $20 decisions.
In my opinion the viable model is voluntarily choosing to allow passive micropayments to lists of supported artists on a user selected timescale per budget, and beautiful insights presentations that allow them to budget it wisely, adjust it, or shut it off when finances require, along with artists who incentivize not just $$$$$ contributors but fans who can provide value in other ways, creatively.
