@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... The slightly used fuel can be reprocessed and used again and again - it's just cheaper to mine new Uranium.
Uranium could be collected from the ocean in a much less damaging manner, but that's more expensive than mining or leaching.
Politics are used to prevent disposal of slightly used fuel - it's really not that hard to choose a tectonically stable desert, dig a deep hole, throw the fuel down and fill the hole back up (in such a desert, there would be no other reason to dig a hole that deep and realistically anyone advanced enough to dig a hole that deep will be able to detect radiation).
Or you can just throw it right into the ocean like the USA did and nothing will happen (probably less of a radioactive isotope release than coal plants, but I need to do the calculations really).
Or if that's too hard, everyone can deliver all of their slightly used "high level nuclear waste" to me for me to dispose - I'll be glad to put it to proper use.
Nuclear doesn't need to be that expensive - but braindead regulations that aren't about safety make it significantly more expensive, but even then, the amount of power output that can be achieved easily returns a profit if the reactor is allowed to keep operating.
