My 'engineering' colleagues aren't good and are badly led. They can't deliver anything with quality above a certain level of complexity. AI simply means they get to their crappy solution sooner rather than later. It doesn't help them step up to a better level of quality.

But the people who actually are good engineers, who understand everything you discuss, are being supercharged by AI if they are careful to understand its strengths and weaknesses

AI is not a savior of the incompetent; it is a high-frequency accelerator of existing trajectories. If the vector of an engineering culture is pointed toward "slop," AI simply ensures they hit the wall at terminal velocity.
