My grandparents were Baptists, and my parents and I were too, for a while. I went to a Catholic school for a few years, and attended mass every week, as was required. Aside from teachers taking us to weekly mass, we had a religion class where I learned about the three religions of the world: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I kept wondering when we were going to learn about the blue people with multiple arms, or that Buddah guy. Apparently they were of no consequence. By the time I was in 7th grade, my mom had gone "new age" and my dad was a clear athiest.
I realized that none of the adults really knew what they were talking about when it came to spirituality. So, I addressed the head honcho. I knew asking God for something was not to be taken lightly, and should be avoided, but this was important. I said, "God. No one here seems to really know what is going on. I am going to wander everywhere I can, far and wide, to seek the truth. The only thing I ask of you, is to slap me back onto the path of truth if I stray too far."
Later, I learned that the ultimate purpose of religion is to give the single human at the top power.
