It is necessary. As an alternative to the more permanent Generac type installs… you can have an electrician install and connect an outlet to the exterior of the home with the electrical panel (less than $1K of work and parts), which allows you to plug in a mobile generator (less than $3K, runs on gasoline, propane, and natural gas options) with enough power output to run the entire house with all things running.
