Snakes never unhinge their jaws at all. The jaw stays fully connected, and a mobile bone called the quadrate swings forward to open a gape of 150 to 180 degrees. The two lower jaw halves are joined by an elastic ligament and move semi-independently, which is how a python walks its mouth over a whole possum.
