If you have an older machine, a secondary one, they make a great way to learn. Put Linux on it and then you can learn at your own pace, while still having your main machine to fall back on if necessary.

Bonus is that most Linux distros will perform better than Windows on the same hardware, so your old machine gets a life extension.
