Bent Measuring Stick

(If you remember when getting sick didn’t also mean getting billed twice.)

Health Insurance Deductible (1995 → 2025)

1995 — The average annual deductible for employer-sponsored family coverage was often under $500, a relatively small fraction of median household income.
2025 — The average family deductible now commonly exceeds $3,000–$4,000, before coverage meaningfully begins.

Income has roughly doubled. Deductibles have increased many times over.

What changed wasn’t the concept of insurance, but how much must be paid out-of-pocket before protection activates. And when the measuring stick bends, coverage begins to feel conditional rather than automatic.
