Look, unless someone can convince me OP_RETURN needs to change *right now*, I'm going to lean on punting the discussion until whatever hypothetical pain is actually unbearable.

From my understanding, op_return doesn't help much because there are other ways around it.
As a developer (not core) having useless code around is annoying and best deleted. However, if this upsets a lot of people, then just let it be... Go focus on more important matters.
