I should have used a more specific quality than just athleticism, because I am not a very successful athlete and there are enough variations on athleticism, depending on activity, that you can quantify it without checking the set of all possible activities. Change to just top speed.
And yes I was aware of the math, being 98% isn't impressive. 1 in 50. You might stand out at a church social, but you aren't going to make a career out of it. Also as the author I get to pick the metric. Given a large enough set of measuable goods, nearly everyone is going to be 98th percentile along some of them. They will end up valuing those qualities in themselves.
