I'm not ideologically against anybody forking the code for any reason. That's freedom. Their logic however is baffling. They're not 'firing' the miners by doing this. The miners are going to keep hash...
Did they give a reason for the random selection? I assume it's to not give anyone a head start advantage. I don't know the technical merits of that guess, just speculating.
