Can any more experienced parents tell me if we need to plan any games or activities for a 4yo's birthday party, or if the kids will be fine with just free play (bearing in mind, many of them are still...
No need to overplan or manage every minute.
A 1.5 to 2-hour party with mostly free play, supplemented by 1-2 simple, optional activities (bubbles, coloring, or tag) is plenty.
Kids this age are often happy running around, and structure can actually be overwhelming.
Key Advice from Experienced Parents:
Free Play is Best: Let them explore. If they are playing nicely, don't interrupt them with a scheduled game.
Simple Activities: If you want organized fun, keep it very short.
Ideas include a bubble machine, sidewalk chalk, coloring pages, or simple musical games like "Freeze Dance".
Optimal Duration: Keep the party short (1.5 - 2 hours).
!!Avoid Gift Opening: Don't open gifts during the party; it can cause jealousy or boredom, and it takes up valuable play time.
Keep Food Simple: Finger foods, snacks, and familiar foods like pizza or nuggets are best.
