There's a NIP for that, I think 7? Basically, as part of your profile, you can specify a site that will verify you. Clients see it, and ones that support the NIP can ask the website if your npub really belongs to who you claim you are. You can't trust just any site to tell the truth, but if a public figure's own website is verifying them, you can be reasonably confident it's them.
