Do people know separation will improve their financial situation dramatically ?
Mostly fear, through "what if" scenarios. The institutions love emphasizing the negative scenarios that could follow an independent Alberta.
One they love mentioning is how Québec had many businesses leave the province, during their separation referendum. What is not being mentioned however, is how that movement was headed by a socialist party, which is what created fear in the market.
To be fair, I do think the first ten years of independence would be harder than what most separatists believe.
Making new trade deals, alliances and building new relationships as a sovereign nation will take time and lots of effort. It won't be a given.
That said, nothing good ever come easy. With risk comes opportunity.
