Way too long.
The company in my anecdote *was* Microsoft. The product was Windows 7. There were over 60,000 active bugs when the product shipped. But the company didn't want to deal with it, so they just pretended there were no bugs going into Win8.
When pressed on it, the rationale that came down from management was "Well, if they're real bugs, then someone will find and file them again," which is just about the most dismissive and condescending thing I've ever heard toward software testers, whose time, despite what management thinks, is neither fungible nor unlimited.
Of course, I guess the joke's on me, because after the next version the company simply fired all of their testers and made the end users the testers (complete with a byzantine and opaque feedback mechanism) thus beginning the current era of normalizing shit software.
