in the book The Hobbit, Bilbo stumbles across the Ring in total pitch black; a chance occurrence driving home the sheer provenance and will power of the Ring itself, setting off the series of events that will indelibly shape the future of Middle Earth forever

in the movie, Bilbo merely witnesses Gollum drop the Ring

*HORRIBLE* directorial decision

it’s as sacrilegious as Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory finding a fucking £5 (or £10?! I forget) note instead of finding the very exact denomination he needed to buy me single chocolate bar

- completely cheapens the storytelling experience
