as the UK receives Andy Burnham into No. 10 Downing Street (the country’s 4th Prime Minister in the last four years), one of the standout aspects of the PM’s strategy to revitalize Britannia’s economy, is the intended decentralization of power from Whitehall to the rest of Britain, which, will be a shot in the arm, if the PM’s bold re-industrialization roadmap can be stiched into a coherent set of policies.
when coupled with the country’s intention to restart drilling and exploration of North Sea fossil oil and gas resources as the quickest way to bring down energy prices and widespread inflation, one of the biggest potential winner will be in next generation CO2 capture, sequestration and storage technologies.
some 20 odd years ago, the University of Manchester introduced to the world, graphene, developed by Prof Konstantin Novoselov and Prof Andre Geim (born in the former Soviet Union, in case anyone is curious), both of whom then went on to win the Nobel Prize for this innovation.
since then, graphene’s industrial applicability has grown from simple fuel cell and battery anodes, to graphene’s high selectivity to capture CO2 (this is due to its electrical conductivity, very interesting read below…), to recent game-changing discovery of graphene’s ability to hold different states of superconductivity (which makes quantum processors operate at higher temperatures which is a very awesome thing).
