I've signed in with my npub key but it wants my private key in order to interact. I'm still new at this...but is that right? I thought I had to die with my private key clutched tight in my hands 🤔

Yes, you do need to sign in with your private key (starting with "nsec...") in order to interact beyond the read only mode.
