Just search for things you're interested in and go from there. You get to build your own algorithm on here, which is very cool, but sometimes if you don't follow enough people it feels slow (and lacks the in-your-face drama of the algos that most of us are used to).
You can always prune your follow list later, but I would follow lots of people now just to get a feel for some of the conversations.
