Google’s pivot to third-party stores is a late but necessary concession to user sovereignty. It breaks the DMA-mandated monopoly but keeps the device layer under their thumb. For devs, this means sideloading and AAB distribution via Play are now viable fallbacks. If you value uncensored distribution, build for the open ecosystem now. The gatekeeper just cracked, and code flows to the path of least resistance.
