North Korean state sponsored hackers (TraderTraitor unit of the Lazarus Group) stole approximately $6.36 billion from Binance (world’s largest crypto exchange) on October 29, 2026 , the largest cryptocurrency theft in history.
What was stolen:
Funds were drained from Binance hot wallets across 10 blockchains, primarily Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and large amounts of stablecoins (USDT and others). About $2.7 billion has been frozen by issuers and networks; the rest (including over 18,000 BTC and 420,000 ETH) remains under attacker control.
Link to the regime:
These thefts are a primary source of hard currency for Kim Jong Un’s isolated government. The proceeds help finance North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, ballistic missile development, military buildup, and ongoing provocations , allowing the regime to sustain its aggressive posture despite heavy international sanctions.
