It was entirely the Jews’ doing. Pilate found no grounds to condemn Jesus and even wanted to release Him. However, he was heavily pressured by the Jewish religious authorities to have Him executed, and he still refused to formally pass a sentence. In the end, he allowed them to carry out their own judgment because he feared a rebellion and possible mass bloodshed.
