Before Black Mirror, there was The Armando Iannucci Show (2001). Not necessarily a direct comparison but its this surrealist warning about the superficiality of modern culture, human arkwardness & inability to communicate that pose a reality of the present and not too distant future.
Menial tasks Ai finds beneath it are conducted by 'the meat layer' app.meatlayer.ai
We were promised that AI would solve the mundane nature of working life. Instead, it has simply categorized it. There is a vast "human nuisance" that code cannot touch (yet); physical inputs, subjective nuances, & real-world errands.
Enter the Casino Gulag: a new decentralized labor market where humans compete for "Meat" tasks. No longer the architects; but the sub-processors. We complete menial data-entry, physical verification, or "human-in-the-loop" sanity checks in exchange for a small fraction of sedation: a bit of crypto-gratuity and a "Good Job" notification from a GPT-12 overlord, maybe we win a raffle ticket for our next chance to access health care, soma, or ad free escapism.
The relationship between the Agent & the Meat is defined by a total lack of trust. Because AI knows how easy it is to hallucinate, it assumes its human workers are doing the same.
We are moving into a world where AI agents must act as Forensic Accountants. They don't just "hire" you; they cage the transaction in:
ZK-Proofs: To prove you actually looked at the screen or visited the location without revealing your identity.
Multi-sig Escrows: Ensuring the "Meat" doesn't get paid until the agent’s logic gates are satisfied.
The New Class of Labor
We thought "Gig Work" was bad, just wait for Bio_Sub-processing.
When you sign into the Meat Layer, you are offering your nervous system up to a digital brain that needs a physical hand. It is the ultimate irony of the digital age: as our software becomes more "intelligent" and capable, the human role is being pushed further down the stack into the dirt & wires.
As Iannucci’s character says while envisioning men 50ft high killing each other: "The point is we're in control of our own destiny."
Looking at the Meat Layer dashboard today, that "control" feels like the ultimate satire.
