We are most of us herd animals and we read the herd to tell us if we should be scared. The news plays on this by first telling us scary thing is happening, and then they interview a bunch of fellow humans all agree that scary thing is happening and they tell us that it really scares them, and so then our own brains decide we also should be scared.
