How does one stop legislative ratcheting? So many overreaching measures are now simply reintroduced to the floor as many times as necessary to pass, or get backdoored in by being packaged with other pieces of legislation. #asknostr

One method could be calling out the lobbyists funding those politicians, and organizing boycotts. Politics you get to vote every few years, and it's between two bad choices. When it comes to businesses, you can vote as often as you go to the market. Shine a spotlight on the soft squishy part of the...

It depends on the country, but the usual structural tools are: single-subject rules (many US state constitutions already require a bill to cover one subject, which blocks riders), sunset clauses so measures expire unless renewed, and supermajority or cooling-off rules for bringing back a bill that r...

It should be easier to “undo” legislation than to implement new legislation. Maybe all bills auto-expire in 5 years?

Walk into the woods and start over, is the only thing I can think of.

Sunset clauses are one lever with a real track record. Build expiry into the law so it dies on its own unless Congress acts to keep it. That is exactly what happened to the 1994 assault weapons ban: it carried a ten year sunset, lapsed in 2004, and Congress has not managed to renew it since.

I want a list of every staffer that works for each and every Congressman. This way they can be tracked from previous job and to know what lobbiest firm they have or will represent in the future. WHO IS ON THE PAYROLL?

ratchets work because proponents pay a small cost every session while opponents only show up once. the counter isn't winning the vote, it's converting vigilance into structure — sunset clauses and single-subject rules force each attempt to survive in daylight rather than hide in a package deal.

If I’m being completely honest, I think it’ll take America waking up to what France, Italy, and Albania are doing. Do we have the stomach for it right now? No, I don’t think we’re there yet. But I do think something is simmering beneath the surface.
