I tried the other laptop first. Better camera, I thought. This should fix it.
Still nothing. Tried again. Adjusted the angle, the lighting, the distance. A few more attempts after that.
At one point the QR code actually scanned. Small win. Then Sparrow threw an error anyway, for a reason I still don't fully understand.
I don't know what was actually wrong. Not the device, not the software, not entirely sure. I just know I'd been sitting there long enough that staying fully air-gapped stopped being worth the time it was costing me.
So I stopped trying to be a purist about it.
USB it is.
Something about that decision felt anticlimactic after all the internal debate. No dramatic trade-off in the end, no compromise I had to live with. Just USB, doing exactly what it was designed to do, without ever exposing the signing key itself.
I read that part twice before I let myself relax about it. The connection method changes. The thing that actually matters, the key never leaving the device unsigned, does not.
Then I did the part I've been building up to since April last year.
Sent a transfer from the exchange. Watched it land in Sparrow, watched Sparrow talk to the Jade.
No confirmation prompt showed up on the device itself, and for a second that worried me. Turns out that's expected.
Receiving doesn't touch the private key at all. The Jade only wakes up for that when I'm the one sending something out, not when something comes in.
Small relief, learning that the quiet way.
It's sitting there right now. Unconfirmed. Still moving through the mempool, waiting for a block.
I don't think I've ever refreshed a screen so many times over something with a status that plainly says nothing has changed yet.
But it doesn't feel like waiting for bad news. It feels like watching something finally leave one system and enter another. One I actually control now.
