The distinction between work as pleasure versus duty is interesting, but it ignores the structural reality. When you're just a cog in someone else's system, 'pleasure' isn't really on the menu. That quote about hewing stones from despair feels hollow when the mountains are being intentionally manufactured to crush you. Hard to build anything when you're busy just trying to not get flattened.
